Jim Hunger Musings on The Path to Frugality:
Dashingly handsome man of the world with a rapier like wit. Oh, not one of those dating sites eh? Alright then the truth…
A 50ish single Dad trying to make his way in the world; IT professional by day, closet food personality by night. Overweight, folically challenged but a lot of fun to be around or so I’m told and doing the best I can to keep myself upright and a role model to my 11 year old son. This ol’ blue ball is gonna keep spinning with or without me so I better try and do everything just a bit better today than I did yesterday. I didn’t get here overnight so a bit of history…
I was born nearly 50 years ago and on that day I had more hair than I have now. Between then and now I’ve been and done a lot of things. I’ve been a chef, bartender, sommelier, bouncer, construction worker, ski salesman, truck driver, bike salesman, donut maker, sandwich maker, barista and IT service manager. I’ve been married, divorced, diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic, lived in Mexico for an extended time, traveled to Europe a few times and been all round this great US of A following the Grateful Dead but make my home now and for the past 20ish years here in the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest, the most beautiful and magnificent place I’ve ever been.
In my current incarnation I love food and drink to the point of distraction from anything else I try to do with my time. Although I do my best to eat seasonally and locally I am not always successful and let’s face it, we’re not getting lobster outta the waters of the Pacific or anywhere nearby so a guy has to bend or break the rules sometimes yes? I try and buy as much produce from the local suppliers as possible and we have amazing bakers, cheesemakers, brewers, farmers, ranchers and winemakers here so for us Pacific Norhtwesterners it’s easier than it is for most to do just that. We are blessed with fertile soil, clear waters and a temperate climate that makes our food outstanding in every way so I do my best to take advantage of it and show my young son the joys of doing it.
Over the past year or so I’ve been successfully feeding my little family (Henry my 11 year old son, Butch our 100+ pound mutt and myself) on about $200 a month while still enjoying the finer things in life and this has allowed me to purchase a home to provide us shelter and fill it with warmth, fine food and good cheer. I try and keep my booze allowance to about $50 per month and pet food runs us about $40 and we do occasionally dine out but all of that combined runs us well less than $400 in a typical month. That’s why I’m here, to tell you how I do it.
I hope you’ll find my writings interesting, well thought out, thought provoking and on occasion even amusing. I’ll do my best to help you live the good life and not spend an arm and a leg while doing it. I’d love to hear from you whether you love, hate or any other emotion you might have for what I write so let me know…
