Written by Scott Cowan on January 4th, 2010

Buying a home in Tacoma or anywhere in the Puget Sound is an expensive task. There are many ways to save money towards your down payment. Please read our other posts on this topic. Every Monday the goal is to share another idea on how to save money that can be used to help you buy your home.

green-your-grocery-cart-foar296Today we are going to discuss shopping smarter for food. Everyone needs to eat and most of us eat boring food and spend too much money on it. My good friend Jim Hunger runs a blog called Musings on the Path to Frugality. We have mentioned Jim and his blog before. I highly recommend that you spend some time reading his blog for tasty things to cook for very little. You can go one step further by shopping smart for your groceries. Too many of us simply go the store without a clear idea of what we are shopping for. We also go when we are hungry. Both will cause you to spend more money than you need or want to spend. I know this is not a blog on cooking but on buying and selling homes in Tacoma so I will keep this short and to the point.

Have a plan to save money on your food. Work your plan and bank the savings towards your downpayment.

There are many places online you can download for free, shopping lists. Spend a few minutes printing one out and filling it out before you go to the store. This alone will both save you time and money. Second make sure you are not hungry when you go shopping. This too will save you time and money as you will not be as interested in looking and buying everything. Plan your shopping trip by looking at the weekly specials that your local stores are running. You can save a lot of money by shopping the ads and using coupons. Remember it’s your moneydollar sign you are saving and you want to buy a house. Every dollar you can save on your food budget can be put directly into your downpayment savings account. This can really begin to add up very quickly and can become highly motivating and exciting to watch your bank balance increase and your kitchen always be full of good things to eat.  Spend a little bit of your time getting ready to shop smarter and your bank account will thank you.  Sooner than you think you will have the necessary money set aside to begin shopping for that home of your dreams.

Please stop back and read our ongoing series on how to save money for your down payment. If you have any suggestions on topics to cover or ways we can improve our content please leave a comment.
