Tired of Facebook Sharing Your Personal Information? 3 Suggestions

Written by Scott Cowan on May 14th, 2010

While not a real estate related topic this is one that most everyone who visits this site will find appropriate.

Are you tired of Facebook sharing your personal information? Does the weekly changes to privacy settings seem a bit much to you? What can you do about it? I have 3 suggestions that will help you.

  1. Stop using Facebook. That’s right go in and delete your account. You can find the instructions here to delete your account. This in my opinion is a silly solution there is no reason to commit social media suicide. However, after you delete your account you will no longer need to worry about what Facebook is doing with their security settings.
  2. Accept that Facebook will continue to evolve and that you as a user will need to continue to evolve with it. You will need to simply go about the tasks of changing your personal privacy settings as necessary so that you feel secure with what information you are sharing on Facebook. Really it seems that it should be common sense that anything you share online will be saved somewhere out of your control. If you are not comfortable with this see suggestion 1. After you complete suggestion 1 remove your computer from whatever method you connect to the Internet and NEVER, EVER go online again. Everything you do online can potentially be saved and misused.
  3. Here is the method that I feel will make Facebook sit up and take notice. First step. STOP clicking on any advertisements on the site. Simply put stop putting money in the advertisers pockets. Once they realize that Facebook is not a platform for their marketing they will stop giving Facebook money. Facebook not getting money will cause them to sit up and realize that we as users are voting with our pocketbooks. That will send a message loud and clear. Included in this is stop playing all games, stop taking all quizzes, stop doing anything but posting on your wall or the wall of others. We all need to remember that when we use a game or an application on Facebook that we are putting money in someones bank account. Part 2 of this step is to simply use Facebook less. If the traffic of the site drops off along with the drop in revenue the powers that be will take notice. They are smart people they will get the message.

Really folks it is time that everyone realizes that everything we do in our lives online is recorded and saved somewhere. It is not just Facebook that is sharing our information it can be every site. Think twice before you share your personal information here or anywhere.

I welcome your thoughts on this topic.
